US condemns crackdown on journalists in Somaliland

The US has condemned violations of freedom of the press in Somaliland, after a series of arrests against journalists and the closure of media houses in the region.

In a statement, the US embassy in Somalia condemned the Somaliland government’s actions against journalists and media houses, calling on the administration to respect freedom of speech.

“@US2Somalia reiterates its commitment to the defense of #PressFreedom. We condemn threats and violations against journalists and the free press in #Somaliland. We call on Somaliland’s leadership to respect, uphold and protect the right to freedom of expression,” a statement by the embassy shared on Twitter read.

Recently, Somaliland arrested several journalists and closed the Universal TV office in Hargeisa over accusations of failing to follow government directives on the media.
