US airstrikes destroy Al-Shabaab propaganda radio in southern Somalia

A US airstrike has destroyed a propaganda radio station of the Al-Qqaeda-linked militant group, Al-Shabaab, in southern Somalia, reports say.

Reports indicate that the drone strike targeted a building hosting pro-Al-Shabaab Radio Al-Furqan in Kunyo-Barrow area in Lower Shabelle region, southern Somalia, on Friday.

The US Africa Command (Africom) confirmed carrying out airstrikes in the area but did not confirm destroying Al-Shabaab’s radio.

“In coordination with the Federal Government of Somalia, U.S. Africa Command conducted two airstrikes in Somalia on Jan. 1, 2021,” Africom said in a statement.

“Both strikes targeted Al-Shabaab compounds in the vicinity of Qunyo Barrow, Somalia. Final assessments are ongoing, however the initial assessment concluded the strikes resulted in the destruction of both targeted compounds,” the statement added.

Africom’s initial assessment, the report said, “is that no civilians were injured or killed as a result of this operation.”
