Two armed men from the the militant group Al-Shabaab on Saturday surrendered to Jubbaland regional administration’s security forces in Afmadow town, lower Jubba region in southern Somalia.

The two men who defected from Al-Shabaab have been identified as Gedi Mohamed Ali, 30, and Abdiaziz. Both were well-known militants in the area, according to officials.

“The two Al-Shabaab militants, Gedi and Abdiaziz defected from Al-Shabaab extremist group to the government security forces in Afmadow town,” a security officer in the town said.

The two former Al-Shabaab fighters have handed over their weapons to the security forces, added the source.

Somali government troops have carried out major offensive operations against Al-Shabaab fighters in the south and central regions of the country, but the militants still control swathes of territory in the two regions and frequently carry out ambushes and roadside bomb attacks.
