Somalia, US sign debt relief agreement

The Somali Minister of Finance Abdirahman Duale Beyle today signed an agreement to reduce and restructure Somalia’s debts to several US agencies.

With Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble present, the agreement was signed at the US embassy in Mogadishu.

Before he left office, former Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire, together with Minister Beyle, continuously worked on the Somali debt relief process, moving the process the stage known as the decision point, with only the completion stage remaining before the US and other donors forgive most of Somalia’s debts.

Separately, the US congratulated Prime Minister Roble on his confirmation for the position by parliament yesterday.

“Delighted to congratulate @MohamedHRoble on his confirmation as #Somalia’s @SomaliPM. We agreed today on the importance of timely implementation of the election agreement, good governance, and continued economic and security reform,” said a statement the US embassy posted on its Twitter account.
