Somalia burns khat smuggled after Covid-19 ban

Authorities in Somalia’s Aden Adde International Airport have seized and burnt a consignment of smuggled khat that was brought into the country despite a ban that was in place over fears of the spread of Coronavirus.

Somalia’s Minister of Transport and Aviation, Mohamed Abdullahi Omaar, said that the stimulant khat leaves were smuggled after the government lifted a flight ban for 48 hours so that Somali citizens stranded in other countries could be evacuated.

Somalia has banned all flights except cargo planes carrying food and medical supplies in a bid to contain the spread of the deadly Covid-19 virus.

Somalia has so far confirmed one case of the Covid-19 virus which has killed over 17,100 people worldwide. About 414,277 persons have been diagnosed with the deadly disease.
