Somalia’s Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism has issued a statement in which it accused a detained journalist of being a member of the militant group, Al-Shabaab.
The statement also said the detained journalist, Mohamed Abduwahab Nur Abuja, was involved in the murder of a woman named Bahsaney Boley who was killed in Bondhere district of the capital, Mogadishu, on 6th March 2019.
The statement added that the security agencies will refer Abuja’s file to the judiciary.
The journalist had been detained by the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA).
Rights groups have accused the government of President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo of a campaign of arrests, intimidation and threats against journalists in a bid to silence them.
A few days ago, security forces arrested Goobjoog Media Group Deputy Director Abdiaziz Ahmed Gurbiye over a Facebook post critical of President Farmajo. He was released on bail days after his arrest following an outcry by journalists and rights groups.
