Somali spy chief reportedly in secret visit to Russia

The acting Director of the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA), Fahad Yasin, has reportedly embarked on a secret visit to the Russian capital, Moscow.

Sources told Somaliaffairs that the Deputy Minister of Information, Mr Adan Isaq, accompanied Mr Yasin during the visit.

The real reason of Fahad’s visit to Russia and whether it was related to intelligence or personal business issues remain unknown.

In the last few years, Russia has increased its influence in Africa, signing about 20 agreements on defence with African countries.

This has raised concerns among Western countries such as the US, France, the UK and Germany.

The new US Africom commander, General Stephen Townsend, recently accused the Kremlin of using Russian mercenaries to take over resources in African countries.

It is also important to note that a Russian national by the name Georgy Djaparidze owns the biggest shares in Soma Oil Company which is involved in oil and gas exploration in Somalia.

No further reports have come out regarding Fahad’s visit to Russia but some have linked it to oil and gas in Somalia.
