Somali political leaders seek parliamentary approval for 2020/21 elections agreement

President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo and federal member state leaders have called on parliament to approve the recent agreement on the 2020/21 elections.

Leaders of all five regional states attended a meeting between Farmajo and the Speakers of the lower and upper houses of parliament in Mogadishu today.

Acting communications director at the presidency, Abdirashid Mohamed Hhashi, said the meeting was aimed at ensuring parliament supports the political agreement.

The electoral agreement recently reached by the president and state leaders requires approval from both houses of parliament, but the two Speakers have themselves been involved in procedural and legal disagreements in recent months.
