Somali pirates active in Nigeria’s territorial waters, says official

12 October 2020: Somali pirates are now active in Nigeria’s territorial waters and the Gulf of Guinea, Nigerian newspaper Punch has reported, quoting the Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, Dr Bashir Jamoh.

“We discovered a correlation between crimes in our waters and the activities of the Somali pirates,” the Nigerian official was quoted as saying.

“They have a means of navigating from the coast of Somalia to Nigeria, through the waters of our West African neighbours,” the official said.

“In some cases, they enter through the land borders and commission boats to carry out their activities,” he added.

There has been no comment yet from the Somali government on the report.
