Unknown assailants have shot dead a Somali legislator in the capital Mogadishu, officials and witnesses said.
Osman Elmi Boqore, a parliamentarian from Zeila, Somaliland, was shot dead near his residence in Karan neighborhood, northern Mogadishu. Eye-witness said the gunmen fled the scene.
Osman was nominated to the assembly in 2000 and was the longest serving member of the Somali legislative. He previously served the parliament as Deputy Speaker.
Immediate former president and the late’s party leader, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud termed the death as “shocking” adding that the country has lost a gem who offered selfless leadership.
No group has so far claimed responsibility for the assassination of Mr. Boqorre, but, Al Shabaab previously carried out such targeted killings in the capital.
