The opposition Forum for National Parties, led by former presidents Sharif Sheikh Ahmed and Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, has welcomed the upcoming meeting between the leaders of the five regional states in the country.
The meeting will be held on Thursday 9th July in the Galmudug state capital, Dusamareb.
In a statement, the FNP however criticised federal government leaders’ absence from the forum.
“The absence of the country’s leaders from the Dusamareb conference is an indication of good hope. The FNP advises the leaders of the Federal Government of Somalia to fulfil their constitutional mandate in order to enable the conduct of free and fair and peaceful elections,” the statement said.
Meanwhile, the United Nations Office in Somalia has welcomed the Dusamareb meeting, saying it would pave the way for a conference bringing together regional state presidents and leaders of the federal government.
The Dusamareb meting is expected to discuss key issues including the conduct of the 2020/2021 elections and the relations between the federal government and regional administrations.
