The Somali opposition party, Wadajir, has congratulated the newly-elected Jubbaland state parliament members, who were today sworn in in Kismayo.
In a press statement, the party also commended the Jubbaland electoral commission for overseeing the successful conclusion of the election.
“The Wadajir Party congratulates members of the second parliament of Jubbaland, who were sworn in today. The party commends the the Independent Commission for Boundaries and Elections of Jubbaland for the efforts it had put in to ensure the election process was fruitful,” it said.
The statement accused federal government leaders of trying to destabilise Jubbaland by creating a parallel electoral commission, referring to the commission recently announced by opposition candidates in Kismayo.
The candidates had rejected the Jubbaland electoral commission, saying it was being used by state president Ahmed Madobe.
However, Wadajir party says the move risks destabilising the region, and implies that top Somali government leaders were behind it.
“The party condemns actions by the top leadership of the federal government to create instability in Jubbaland and warns government leaders to end attempts to derail the Jubbaland elections, by creating a parallel electoral commission that may turn people against one another and lead to instability,” it said.
The statement further urges government leaders to instead concentrate on the war with the militant group Al-Shabaab and other important issues.
Finally, Wadajir urged Jubbaland leaders and politicians to resolve their differences through peaceful means of dialogue and make concessions to each other.
