Somali opposition leaders welcome Puntland, Galmudug leaders’ mediation offer

The Council of Presidential Candidates’ Union has welcomed the offer by the leaders of Puntland and Galmudug regional states, Said Abdullahi Deni and Ahmed Abdi Kariye Qoor-Qoor to mediate between the opposition leaders and the federal government over the election impasse.

The Council, in a statement published on the Twitter handle of one of its leaders Abdirahman Abdishakur Warsame, hailed the dedication of the two leaders in their efforts to resolve the dispute.

Below is the full statement by the Council of Presidential Candidates’ Union on Qoor-Qqoor and Deni’s mediation offer:

The Council of the Presidential Candidates’ Union welcomes the efforts of the Presidents of Galmudug and Puntland regional states, Ahmed Abdi Kariye (Qoor-Qqoor) and Said Abdullahi Deni to resolve the dispute over the the country’s election management process.

The Council commends the leadership of the two states for their dedicated work in resolving the impasse over the implementation of the country’s elections.

The Council in particular commends President Qoor-Qoor for honouring the initial understanding between him and Council.

The Council calls on the leaders of other states in the country to play a positive role in resolving the dispute over the management of the 2020/21 elections at the federal level.

Finally, the Council warns against any attempt to derail the efforts of the Presidents of Galmudug and Puntland, and to hold elections that are not agreed upon by the country’s political stakeholders.
