Somali opposition leader, UN envoy discuss 2020 polls, tension in Gedo

Prominent Somali opposition leader Abdirahman Abdishakur Warsame today held talks with the UN envoy to Somalia, James Swan.

The Wadajir Party leader and the UN envoy discussed the 2020/2021 elections, the tension in Gedo region after federal government forces took control of major towns in the region and also the situation in Galmudug after the disputed elections there.

“In a meeting I held with the Special Envoy of the UN Secretary General for Somalia, Ambassador James Swan, we discussed 2020/2021 election issues, the worsening relations between the federal government and regional states, the situation in Gedo region and the [disputed] elections in Galmudug,” Warsame said in a post on his Facebook page.

Warsame, a fierce critic of President Farmajo’s administration, has in the past accused the federal government of undermining regional states and violating the Constitution.

Federal government troops have in the last few days taken over control of key towns in Gedo region, sparking fears of clashes with troops loyal to the Jubbaland administration who are also in the region.
