Somali opposition leader calls for release of detained journalist

Opposition Wadajir Party leader Abdirahman Abdishakur Warsame has called on the government to immediately release journalist Abdulahi Kulmiye Adow.

The journalist was reportedly arrested by agents of the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA), after he interviewed businessman Abukar Omar Osman, who reportedly supports Al-Shabaab’s ideology.

“I call on government officials to release journalist Abdullahi Kulmiye Adow, who was unjustly incarcerated,” Warsame said.

“No one detained the current NISA director when, as a journalist working for Al Jazeera, he used to interview senior leaders of the terrorist group, Al-Shabaab, in the bushes. Abuse of power is the injustice that has led our country to the collapse that we are yet to recover from,” he added.

The Somali government has been accused of stiffling freedom of the press by constantly harassing and detaining journalists over critical reporting.
