Somali opposition leader calls for ‘inclusive, timely’ elections in 2020

Prominent Somali politician Abdirahman Abdishakur Warsame has accused the federal government of failing to prepare the country for universal suffrage elections in the upcoming 2020/2021.

“A year left of its mandate; the Federal Government of Somalia has failed to prepare the country for one person one vote elections. It failed to deliver census, voter registration, citizenship law, electoral law, constitutional review, agreement with Federal Member States, security and resources which is essential for election,” Warsame tweeted.

“Therefore, anyone who entertains the thought that there will be one person one vote elections in 2020 is paving the way for term extension. We have to confront realities and engage in dialogue to agree inclusive, timely, improved model of election in accordance with the Constitution,” he added.

Somalia’s National Independent Electoral Commission (NIEC) recently announced plans to register millions of Somalis to participate in the 2020/2021 elections.
