Somali army seizes strategic area from Al-Shabaab in Lower Shabelle region

Somali army commandos known as Danab today recaptured Taran Torow area in Lower Shabelle region, southern Somalia, from the militant group Al-Shabaab.

The commandos from the Baledogle military airbase entered Toran Torow area, a strategic area for Al-Shabaab militants, without any resistance after fighters from the Al-Qaeda-linked group pulled out.

Toran Torow was Al-Shabaab’s judicial headquarters in Lower Shabelle region and was also where the militants used to collect the taxes they take from businesses and individuals in the region.

The area was taken by the army several times in the past few years, but the troops could not hold on to it for long and withdrew. It is not yet known if the troops would this time round remain in the area.
