The Somali National Army (SNA) has announced killing 12 Al-Shabaab fighters in an operation near Barire area, Lower Shabelle region in southern Somalia.

The commander of the 143rd unit of the SNA, Ahmed Hassan Siyad, said that the army received a tip-off from residents over the presence of the militants after which the soldiers attacked them, killing 12 and wounding others.

The SNA commander revealed that the troops removed landmines planted by the militants in the area.

The army has in the last few months stepped up its operations against the Al-Qaeda-linked group in the Lower Shabelle region, but the group still carries out frequent attacks against government forces and African Union troops in the region.
