Six members of a US-trained unit of the Somali National Army have been killed while several others were wounded after their military vehicle ran over a landmine, setting off an explosion leading to the death and injuries among the soldiers.
Reports indicate that the landmine went off just near Lego town in Lower Shabelle region a short while after the troops left the Baledogle airbase, south-central Somalia.
The militant group Al-Shabaab said it was behind the attack and claimed that it killed 12 US-trained Somali soldiers.
The Somali army has in recent past intensified its attacks against the Al-Shabaab in the regiongr but the Al-Qaeda-linked frequently targets military and other government vehicles with roadside bomb attacks.
