Nugal Region Governor Abdisalam Hassan Hersi and former regional police chief Farah Galangoli were today wounded in a suicide attack in front of the police station in Puntland state capital, Garowe.
A man with a suicide vest blew himself up beside a vehicle carrying the two officials and a number of security guards, according to reports.
Four security guards were wounded, some seriously, said eyewitnesses. All the victims have been taken to hospital and are undergoing treatment. This was the first attack of its kind in Garowe in several years.
Al-Qaeda-affiliated Al-Shabaab has claimed responsibility, according to a statement shared on the group’s propaganda websites. The statement only said that several officials were wounded.
The militant group, together with branch of the Islamic State in the country, operate in Bari Regin’s Golis mountain ranges. Both groups have been carrying out attacks and assassinations against Puntland security forces, who have been struggling to expel the militants from the region.
