Puntland leader calls for elimination of current electoral law

Puntland President Said Abdullahi Deni has called for the elimination of the electoral law recently signed by President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo.

Deni, who addressed the opening of the 46th session of the Puntland parliament, said the law contains several provisions that are against the country’s provisional constitution.

The Puntland leader also repeated calls for a political stakeholders’ conference to discuss the 2020/21 elections.

His comments come as a dispute over the electoral process continues to worsen, with the Jubbaland regional state yesterday rejecting an offer by the federal government to give Ahmed Mohamed Islam (Ahmed Madobe) a two-year mandate.

In his speech, Deni also commented on the talks that have commenced in Djibouti between Somalia and Somaliland, mediated by Djibouti and Ethiopia.
He said Puntland will not recognize any agreement resulting from the Djibouti talks.
