Mandera leaders ask fugitive Somali official Janan to leave

Leaders from Kenya’s Mandera County led by Governor Ali Roba have called for the expulsion of fugitive Jubbaland security minister Abdirashid Janan from their town, saying they would not accept Mandera to be a battleground between Somalia government troops and his forces.

In a news conference, the leaders called on the Kenyan authorities to disarm Janan’s forces whom they said have crossed to Mandera.

The leaders also urged the Kenyan and Somalia governments to resolve their differences through dialogue.

meanwhile, responding to the Mandera leaders’ call, Abdirashid Janan denied he was in Mandera, insisting that he was in Bula Hawo.

Speaking to the VOA, Janan however said that he would go to Mandera or even Nairobi when the time comes, saying that the Kenyan government was a friendly country.

The standoff has raised fears of an all-out conflict in Bula Hawo between the federal government troops who took control of several towns in Gedo and those of Jubbaland administration.

The situation was however calm on Monday in the Somalia town bordering Kenya’s Mandera.
