Members of Somalia’s Lower House of Parliament are today expected to deliberate on the electoral draft law for the 2020/2021 polls.
Last week, the Lower House distributed copies of the bill to parliamentarians ahead of today’s session during which a heated debate is expected as the MPs discuss the various articles of the bill.
Sources have reported that the current draft law proposes the winner takes all model, also known as the First Past the Post instead of the proportional representation model.
However, amendments made to the draft law by a parliamentary committee are reportedly being opposed by MPs close to the government who support the Proportional Representation electoral model.
The electoral bill, which was approved by the cabinet in May, was discussed by the parliamentary committee for elections who amended some provisions that were deemed inconsistent with the Provisional Constitution.
