Ethiopia reportedly withdraws troops from Somalia as fighting rages in Tigray

Ethiopia has reportedly withdrawn thousands of troops from neighbouring Somalia amid escalation of fighting in the northern region of Tigray.

Reports indicate that Addis Ababa withdrew about 3,000 troops from the Gedo region of Somalia who were helping the Somali federal government fight the militant group Al-Shabaab and maintain security in the region.

The Ethiopian troops have been reportedly deployed to northern Ethiopia to join the fighting against forces loyal to the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF).

Some analysts fear the withdrawal of Ethiopian forces may undermine the war against Al-Shabaab in Somalia.
