Ethiopia denies withdrawing thousands of troops from Somalia

Ethiopia has denied that it has withdrawn thousands of troops from Somalia in order to reinforce the forces fighting in Tigray region against the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF).

Ethiopian Ambassador to Somalia Jamaluddin Omar denied any Ethiopian troops were withdrawn from Somalia to join the fighting in Tigray region, contrary to media reports that at least 3,000 Ethiopian National Defence Forces (ENDF) sldiers left their bases in and around the Somali border town of Dolo in Gedo region.

Speaking to the VOA Somali Service, Ambassador Omar also denied other reports that hundreds of Tigrayan members of the Ethiopian troops in Somalia were disarmed by their colleagues for fear of infighting among the troubled country’s forces.

Analysts have raised fears that the war in ethiopia may spill to neighbouring countries and lead to instability in fragile states such as Somalia whose weak government is struggling to defeat the militant group Al-Shabaab.
