Heavy fighting erupted today in Ba’adweyne town, Mudug Region, after Al-Shabaab fighters attacked the national army and Galmudug state forces in the town.
The Galmudug state’s governor for Mudug Region, Abdirahman Diriye Ishal, said the government forces stationed in the town successfully repulsed the Al-Shabaab attack and inflicted casualties on the enemy.
The Governor said hundreds had fled the fighting, calling for urgent assistance to those displaced by today’s fighting.
Reports say at least 20 people were killed with many others injured in the intense battle.
Al-Shabaab has said in its propaganda outlets that the militants wrested control of the town from the army and seized at least five military vehicles and heavy military hardware.
However, these claims could not be independently verified, and accounts by locals in the area indicate the town remains under government control.
