Al-Shabaab militants on Saturday night attacked four bases of the Somali army in Lower Shabelle region, Southern Somalia.
Fighters from the militant group attacked Somali military bases in Qoryoley, Awdegle, Barire towns and a military base at the outskirts of Afgoye town in Lower Shabelle region.
The attacks led to hours of heavy fighting between the Somali army and the heavily armed Al-Shabaab fighters.
Reports indicate that the fiercest fighting took place in Qoryoley town, where the two sides both sides used heavy weapons in the fighting.
Residents of Qoryoley town have confirmed that at least three people were killed and more than 10 others were wounded in the clash.
“Homes and businesses were burned down during the fighting but the situation in the town is now calm and the daily activities have come back to normal,” one of the residents of Qoryoley town said.
Somali National Army commanders in the Lower Shabelle region have not yet commented on the attacks.
In the past weeks, Al-Shabaab has escalated its attacks on military bases in the southern Somalia, targeting both AU and government troops.
